Ginger Cookies

It's that time of year! It's been a tradition in my family to make ginger cookies at Christmas time for several generations...This is my grandmothers recipe.... Who taught my Mom how to make them.... Who taught me.....Who taught Aimee and Alli....My sisters also make them every year with their kids too. They are delicious and soft (not the hard kind). Enjoy!
I usually QUADRUPLE this recipe because I always like to make a lot.

This year I waited until Alli came home from college and we made them together. So fun!

1 cup sugar
3/4 cup shortening (crisco)
4 tbsp. molasses
1 egg, beaten
2 cups flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger
1/2 tsp. powdered cloves
1/2 tsp. salt

Mix ingredients and chill for several hours. Roll into balls, roll in sugar (I add red and green sprinkles to the sugar). Bake at 350 degrees for 7-8 minutes. Do not overbake!

  1. Wish I could have been in the kitchen with Mom & Alli, but still managed to make them in my bitty toaster oven on the same day... I was there I spirit!

Notes from Cambodia on this (now-not-secret) recipe:
    - you can use butter instead of crisco
    - if no molasses, use 3/4 cup brown sugar & 1/4 cup water for every cup of molasses (BUT tastes more sweet and not as full of a flavor)

Everyone LOVED them here! Thanks Grandma Jane!
